South Africa mine claims world’s largest diamond
by Brian Turner
A shareholder in a small South African mine has claimed the company has discovered the world’s largest diamond.
Weighing in at a massive 7,000 carats, it would be more than double the size of the Cullinan Diamond, centre-piece of the British crown jewels.
Brett Jolly, the shareholder, said the gem had now been moved to a secure bank vault in Johannesburg.
A spokesperson for De Beers, the specialist diamond company, suggested that the gem was unlikely to be a diamond.
Aside from it’s colossal size, photographs show it with a clear greenish-tinge, which is very rare for diamonds. Additionally, it was found in a region with little history of diamond exploration.
However, he conceded that if it were a diamond, then it would be the “find of the century”.
In the meantime, it will be tested later this week to see if it really is an authentic diamond.
