Diamonds North recovers 2850 diamonds

by Jo Black

Diamonds North Resources Ltd. announces the recovery of 2850 diamonds from the remaining 412.15 kilograms of percussion drill sample collected from the Tuktu-1 kimberlite in 2007. Sample Tuktu-1B exhibits a significant increase in larger sized diamonds. The Tuktu-1 kimberlite is located on the Company’s 100% owned Amaruk property in the Pelly Bay Diamond District of Nunavut. The sample was submitted as part of the company’s ongoing due diligence and quality control process and to gain additional information on the diamond distribution on the Tuktu-1 kimberlite.

Tuktu-1B sample is five times larger that the original Tuktu-1 sample, yet Tuktu-1B yielded 16.5 times more diamonds on the 0.60mm sieve and 6 stones on the 0.85mm sieve. The diamond counts increased slightly from 6.7 to 6.9 diamonds / kilogram, which may be attributable to the recovery of larger diamonds. This proves the existence of a coarser diamond population in this kimberlite sample. Collection of a much larger sample using drill core, which will begin within the next few weeks, will further evaluate Tuktu-1’s large diamond potential.

What we really like about Tuktu-1 is the diamond counts and stone sizes improve as the sample size increases, states Mark Kolebaba President and CEO of Diamonds North. These results provide the company with tremendous confidence as we embark on collecting larger samples in 2008.

A total of 192 diamonds on and above the 0.30mm sieve from this sample were described in detail and the majority are white, octahedral forms with high clarity. The three largest stones recovered include 1.4mm x 1.0mm x 0.72mm; 1.34mm x 1.16mm x 0.88mm; 1.16mm x 1.14mm x 0.98mm. The largest fragment, which is estimated to represent 20% of the original diamond, measured 1.04mm x 0.82mm x 0.48mm.

The 412.15 kilogram sample was collected from a depth of approximately 24.5 metres to 91 metres, where the drill ended in kimberlite. The 81.75 kilogram sample was collected from a depth of 15 metres to 23 metres (kimberlite sampled from 23 metres to 24.5 metres was sent in for geo-chemical analysis).

Diamonds North has discovered 22 kimberlites to date on the Amaruk property. More than 90% of the known kimberlites are diamondiferous and 50% exhibit diamond counts that require follow-up exploration. At least 500 compelling geophysical targets remain to be tested on the property.
