Gem Diamonds to restart Cempaka

by Sarah Wilsdon

Gem Diamonds, a global leading diamond producer, has reached an agreement on an appropriate water treatment process at the Cempaka alluvial diamond mine in Indonesia, and the company is expected to recommence the mining in Q3, 08.

Gem Diamonds is an 80% shareholder, in partnership with the Indonesia’s state owned PT Aneka Tambang, in the Cempaka mine, which comprises of two paleo channel systems, the Danau Seran and the Cempaka channels, both located in a low lying coastal swamp area of the South Kalimantan Province of Indonesia.

Due to certain environmental issues raised by the regional Government of the South Kalimantan Province in April 2008, Gem Diamonds had temporarily suspended mining operations at Cempaka.
